More space in our homes! How so much we want it!

Armed with some tips and a little skill, we can efficiently use the available home space and still have some areas left to save!

This comprehensive article is written to share some wonderful home space-saving tips with you. We believe the year 2020 can be a fresh start for you to make space-saving changes in your home arrangement. So let’s get started!

P.S: There is an infographic on space saving for 2020 at the end of this article. Feel free to share and embed it on your site.

1. Drawers Do the Trick

a picture of a drawer containing items neatly organized

Drawers, especially tall drawers, can take in far more objects than the area of floor space they occupy. To simply put it, a drawer is a space saving box.

If you care to save space in a small home, especially if you have lots of small objects, consider having a tall drawer. It helps save space and reduce clutter.

2. Space Inside Your Coffee Table

coffee table with space to store items

A coffee table is usually featured in interior decor magazines and media as an important item in the home. But many times, these interior décor magazines and media feature a coffee table as a piece of furniture with ornamental potential rather than as an item with utilitarian potential.

But for those of us that really want to make use of the spaces in our small homes efficiently, the coffee table matters a lot. Your coffee table is a potential storage area if you plan it like that from the outset, or if you are ready to modify it.

If you are looking to really save space in your home, do not overlook the coffee table. Many living room items like remote controls, keys, and compact discs can be stored inside a coffee table that’s been made (or modified) for storage. Do consider using it so.

3. There’s a Lot of Space Outdoors

a picture showing the outdoor of a house

We are so used to keeping everything we have inside our homes that we often forget there is a lot of space left outside our houses too.

Our cars (and children swings!) are probably the only objects that don’t live with us inside our main living area. Yet, there are a lot of other objects that need not live with us inside our house. Putting these objects outside can save a lot of space for us within the home.

Stuff like toolboxes, garden implements, and excess construction materials like pipes, hoses, etc are objects that are usually designed to be weatherproof and can stay outside for a long time without problems. Even if they are not weatherproof, they can be covered in tarpaulin or other waterproof materials and stored outside. For anybody looking to save space within the home, these kinds of objects have no business staying indoors.

4. Shelves Above Doorways

a picture showing doorway with space

You can save floor space for many rooms in your house by installing shelves above the doorways. Surely, there is no room in the house without a doorway!

Having shelves above the doorways presents some advantages:

i. The shelves can be melded into the upper woodwork of the door itself, thereby giving the door a multipurpose and innovative feel.

ii. The area is perfect storage for articles you don’t need often, thereby enabling you to leave other parts of your wall free for the use of more decorative wall furniture or art.

While we were younger, my dad installed a shelf above the doorway of our living room, it contains stuff we don’t need often. But more importantly, the day I was able to reach it without climbing on top of a small stool was the day I confirmed I have really grown up. Then I started putting my stuff there too! Who knows? This fixture might have a sentimental meaning for your kids too.

5. Obstructions Are Hiding Your Space

a picture with the phrase "no to obstruction"

If you are looking to take control of the space in your home, you will have to eliminate obstructions as much as possible. Obstructions are any objects that prevent you from seeing what lies behind them. Obstructions usually go with clutter.

As the owner of a small home where every inch of space matters, you must be able to see through your space, and you must be able to know what lies behind any object. In fact, you must know if your items are not positioned in such a way as to make access to further floor (or wall) space impossible.

If there is any obstruction in your room or house, try to see if you can clear these obstructions by putting the items in another place such as inside the drawer or cabinet. Or see if you can move these items to the garage or outdoors. Simply giving them away is another option to consider.

As much as possible, have a zero-tolerance for “obstructions”.

6. Hook Them All

hook what is hookable

Put hooks on your wall and cleverly hang everything that can be possibly hanged on it. However, make sure you don’t clutter the wall while doing so.

You can hang your cooking utensils, overcoats, caps, etc. In fact, you can hang your bicycle or that of your kid in the garage. Many of these objects are designed to be hanged. And even if they are not designed to be hanged, you can do so by making a little adjustment. Simply be creative and you will see that you can neatly hang many things. Objects that are hanged take up literally no floor space and will save that space for you for other uses.

7. Fold Your Bed

Do you want to know how you can use your bedroom floor space for other uses when you are not sleeping? Fold your bed!

It is not unusual for architects who design small homes to economize space by designing the bedroom small – because they know that the bed, which is usually the main bedroom furniture, comes in different sizes and the bedroom can be equipped with a narrow type. So, for almost every owner of a small home, the bedroom space is very precious.

However, no matter how small your house is, life must continue within it, and this sometimes requires the need for additional space in the bedroom for other activities. In this case, don’t ever forget your bed is never designed to be a piece of permanent unmovable furniture. When you are not sleeping and you desperately need bedroom space for daytime activities, simply fold up your bed and put it aside. The smaller your bed, the easier this will be.

It is a clever idea to consider getting those pieces of furniture that can be used as a bed during the night and as a chair during the day.

8. Put Things Under The Chairs (Sitting Area)

chairs with space for storage

Do you really want to damn convention and save space? Then you will need to consider putting stuff under your chair whenever possible.

Either you are using cushioned chairs or unadorned plastic or wooden chairs, the space under them is still SPACE, and it can be put to good use, especially if there is no option left. Your chairs can’t bite you for putting pieces of stuff under them, so go ahead.

Ottoman storage bench is another space saving furniture you can use. These items double as a storage box and a bench.

9. Create False Floors

false floor picture

False floors are true floors actually, they just do more jobs than just being floors.

A floor that is hollowed out and used as a storage area becomes a false floor, so are purpose-built wooden floors that allow storage underneath them, opening like a trunk.

False floors are gaining some popularity as a means of saving space in the home. The storage space they offer is incredible! Some are so cavernous they offer almost equal space below the floor area as above it.

Consider creating a false floor if your space is just too small and you have the facilities to create this type of floor.

10. Dividers Can Create You New Spaces

Using room dividers to create a partition within a room can give you new spaces within an old room.

This can be especially necessary if you are in a jurisdiction where it is illegal to add additional structures to your home. So, until you get permission to do that, you can use room partitions to divide a room and use the partitioned spaces for varied functions.

Interestingly, some room dividers also have shelves that can be used to store items. This means you can divide your room and still store some items on the divider itself. Nothing seems wasted here!

11. Use A Bunk

Bunks aren’t reserved for institutions alone. It can also be beautifully used to save spaces in your home.

The principle of how bunks can help you save space is quite clear to see. If the number of people in your home is too much to use the available space efficiently, you better start bunking up!

You can also get a bunk that has a bookshelf so that you can store some of your books on the shelf.

12. Fold-Out Dining Tables And Fold Away Desks

picture of dinning table

Just like their name implies, these are tables that can be folded and tucked away against the wall. They are great space savers. After all, we don’t need a table at all times in the home. When unneeded, it can be simply be folded away. Small homeowners having space challenges should consider having them.

13. Use Up Wasted Spaces

A little critical look at how you arrange the properties in your house may reveal if you have been wasting spaces, when erstwhile, you were complaining you have no space.

If you find yourself in this situation, what will you do? Of course, you should use up any wasted space! Who knows, you might even have enough space to save after use.

When looking for wasted spaces in the house, pay special attention to the following:

i. Under the staircase

ii. The wall of your rooms

iii. The outdoor area

iv. The garage

v. Under your bed

vi. Inside your cabinet

vii. Around your doorways

14. Create Multipurpose Rooms

multipurpose room for different things

Why not use your study as a sitting area too? Or use your living room as a home library?

These are just two examples of how you can use any room in your home for multiple functions without any hassle.

Naturally, if your home is small and you are having challenges with space management, using a room for multipurpose functions will come naturally to you.

15. Use Multi-Functional Furniture

chair can be used as bed

There are ottomans that can also serve as a storage area. There are coffee-tables that can do likewise. There are chairs that can serve as beds and there are beds that can be folded up like sofas. We have mentioned some of these items before, but our list is definitely not exhaustive!

Multi-functional pieces of furniture are excellent items for saving space in a small or large home.

16. Save Space with Your Decors

It’s not bad to have decorative objects in the home, but when they are taking up usable space, they can become a source of annoyance. However be it though, we don’t need to throw away our decors for want of space if we plan well. Decors like vases and shells can also serve as a storage area in addition to their use as decors. Vases, for example, can house loose pins, buttons, pencils, and pens while serving simultaneously as decors. This can save us a lot of space.

17. Use Corner Shelves

corner shelves with various objects

What do you use the corners in your house for? Probably as a rest for your umbrella and walking stick? There is more to using a corner than that, and it might start by installing a corner shelf in your favorite corner.

A corner shelf is a shelf made in such a way so as to occupy the corner. A corner shelf render corners very useful for storage and it is not a bad idea to equip each corner of your house with a corner shelf (especially if you really need more space). With a corner shelf, jars, small boxes, shoes, tools and appliances that would otherwise take up loose spaces everywhere else in the house can be neatly arranged on the shelf. The floor is left free for any other use that might come up.

18. Save Space With Your Stairs

use stairway for space saving

In one of our previous articles, we discussed various ways of how a home library can be fashioned out of any possible space in the home. There, we mentioned a small home library can be fashioned out of under an indoor staircase. We wrote that because we are very aware that there can be substantial space under the stairs!

For example, you can put rack(s) under the staircase and then store those items that would otherwise clutter other useful space inside the rack.

19. Embrace Spice And Utensils Organizer

Utensil organizer comes in various sizes and forms, but they have been optimized to present our utensils within easy reach while using up minimal space in storage. So also are spice organizers.

Although many modern women already embrace spice and utensils organizers in their kitchen, it won’t be bad to remind those who haven’t done so yet. They are such good space saving devices we think everybody with a kitchen should have them.

In short, utensils and spice organizers are space savers in a single package and you should embrace them.

20. Keep Only Stuffs You Absolutely Need

picture depicting being simple and less clutter

The whole essence of saving spaces in the home will be defeated if the home is already like a hoarder’s den. Saving spaces in the home can only be smoothly done if the home is uncluttered, or already decluttered. Decluttering is a practice we have written about before and you can find the article here. It’s interesting to know that one of the principles of decluttering is to acquire properties responsibly – buying and keeping only what you need. This equally applies to saving spaces in the home too: keep only the stuff you absolutely need in your home.
